First written records of the town go back to
1607, where Tulchin was mentioned as a Polish fortress Nestervar
of the Brazlav province. At the second half of the XVIII century
Tulchin was the possession of Polish magnates Pototskie. The palace
of Stanislav Felix Pototskij, built on the project of French
architect Lakrya, remained till nowadays. The palace is considered
to be best example of Classicism in Ukraine. At the time of Pototskij
the palace gleamed with luxury and splendor: gilding and sophisticated
stucco moulding, grand furniture, walls decorated with the paintings
of Rafael and Rembrandt (three paintings of Tulchin are in the Paris
Lyvr). Holland designer Merx thoroughly thought over the interior
of every hall. Famous people of the time visited the palace; the
balls held there were not inferior to the best European feasts.

Palace of Pototskih
The park, designed around the palace by an
English gardener Miller was represented not only by local flora
but also by exotic trees and bushes and had a system of ponds and
canals. Arbors, fountains and sculptures decorated alleys. Some
historians claim that in the palace Stanislav Pototskij met his
future wife Sofia, for whom he later built a park of gorgeous beauty
in Uman.
Famous Russian poet A.S. Pushkin, Polish poets
Stanislav Trembetskij and Yuliush Slovatskij, writer Frantschishek
Kovalskij and others walked under the shadows of the trees in the
alleys.

(now it is the Church of Christ’s Birth), the Uspenskaja church,
a small palace, where in 1796-1797 an outstanding military leader
A.V. Suvorov lived, were built and the cemetery church was rebuilt.
In Pechera village, one of the most picturesque places in Tylchischina

of Pototskih, was created on the project of Ukrainian architector
